The Art of Writing
Crafting a sharp-looking design is important but how effective would that piece be if the copywriting were amiss? What you say and how you say it is every bit as important as the aesthetic. Say too much and drown your audience in a sea of text; say too little and your audience misses the point. Writing copy that truly sells is an art unto itself, and while I never imagined that copywriting would be such a critical component of my skillset, the ability to artfully piece together a few words here and there has landed me more than one job.
I was required to take a pair of copywriting courses in college but I credit much of my ability towards being a well-read individual. From a very young age I enjoyed spending time at the local library reading as many books as I possibly could. Before the days video games, endless television options, and summer matinees, books were the ultimate escape.
My earliest copywriting experience dates back nearly fifteen years ago as a young graphic designer working on ads and brochures for Radisson hotels. Armed with ample time and a boss who had too much on her plate, I was given the opportunity to take a few bullet points and expand on them in paragraph form.
I was fortunate to have the opportunity work side-by-side with a few talented writers as we pieced together content for the hollywood.com website. I was the art director for the site, developing the front-end for the site, and while I didn't write any content per-se, my exposure to their skills rubbed off on me.
But I gained mose of my professional writing experience working as the lone creative lead at Shoes For Crews. A small company, I was responsible for designing and writing content for the website, banner ads and emails. And in print, I wrote copy for ads, brochures, direct mail and flyers.
Since then it seems that no matter for whom I'm developing creative content, I inevitably end up writing the copy as well. Might I write something for you? Certainly a possibility. Why not contact me by following the link below.
